Dealing with Political Correctness and Diversity

Introduction:

We hear of court cases all the time, which indicate that the workplace is anything but a place of peace for many who profess belief in Jesus Christ. To stand up for moral and “traditional” values is a dangerous thing in many corporate environments.  How do we cope?  What can we do on a daily basis to make things better?

I. The Problem

A.     Iowa court case - 2008

B.     Not only in matters of homosexuality…

1.     August ’09 – New Hampshire girl ordered to attend a public school because her faith is “too securely held and must be sifted, tested by, and mixed among other worldviews.”

2.     Don’t parents have a fundamental right to make the educational choices for their children?

C.     The diversity and tolerance craze has become powerful.

D.    Too often – it is “one way” diversity.

1.     Tolerance for only a certain, accepted point of view.

2.     Others may be eliminated, or silenced at best.

E.     How long before the Bible is deemed socially incorrect or offensive?

II.  What to do?

A.     Don’t forget the power of a good example.

1.     1 Peter 2:12; 3:1-2

2.     Example in speech – Eph. 4:29; 5:4; Col. 4:6

3.     Example in actions – 1 Peter 1:13-19

B.     Work with respect and humility toward others.

1.     Philippians 2:3-4 – work with an attitude of service.

2.     Look for opportunities to serve everyone – even those who live a lifestyle that you may disagree with. We can serve without condoning their behavior.

3.     Luke 15:1-2 – Jesus did.

C.     Publicly insist that your view be fairly represented at all “diversity” sessions.

D.    When the opportunity presents itself, speak up, using words of wisdom.

1.     Christian values are not equal to homophobia, hate, or bigotry.

E.     Create a bible study group for you & your coworkers – with approval from management.

1.     You may be amazed at how this can create relationships between coworkers and open up lines of communication that may not have been there previously.

Conclusion:

A.     Chances are….that things will get worse before they get better.

B.     Matthew 5:9-12;

C.     Even in times of rejection & persecution, our light can shine.
