Humanism and Its Consequences

Introduction:

Though perhaps many of us have never heard of the term humanism (let alone know what it is), we have all seen the by-products of its use.  We have all witnessed the slow erosion of anything that is deemed moral and right. We have also seen the removal of God out of the public square. These are all results of the philosophy called humanism.

I. What Is Humanism?

A.     A philosophy that usually rejects supernaturalism and stresses an individual’s dignity and worth and capacity for self-realization through reason.

1.     Secular humanism – “Humanistic philosophy viewed as a non-theistic religion antagonistic to traditional religion.

2.     Humanism is a religion in which man is encouraged to explore and fulfill his own desires and wants. Its entire existence is based upon science.

B.     Humanism’s beliefs regarding…

1.     Religion

3.     Individual

II. Humanism’s Reach

A.     Humanism is not contained to news stories and happenings in other places.

1.     The effects of humanism are seen and felt each day.

2.     We see humanism…In our schools; In our government; In our media; In the scientific world

B.     One area of great concern are the schools our young people are attending.

III. How Does Humanism Affect Us?

A.     The abandonment of traditional moral values has led to the decline in society’s morality.

1.     Due to this we now experience…

a.      Abortion, drug use, adultery, divorce, crime, violence, etc.

b.     Things that would not have been tolerated years ago, has become the norm.

B.     For humanists there is no room for people to criticize or condemn another’s activities.

IV. What Is the Solution to Humanism?

A.     The recognition that God does exist – Rom. 1:18-23

B.     A dependence upon God for guidance – Rom. 1:28-32

1.     Man is incapable of charting his own path in life. Jer. 10:23; Eph. 4:17-19

C.     An acceptance of the two greatest commandments – Matt. 22:37-40

D.     Resisting worldly thinking – Rom. 12:1-2

Conclusion

A.     Humanism is a cancer on our society, one that will lead to destruction and not peace and harmony.
