The Great Shepherd - Psalm 23

Introduction

A.     Most people agree this psalm is written as a result of Absalom’s bid overthrow his father, David (2 Samuel 17).

B.     It is perhaps the most quoted section of the Bible and is noted for its beauty and message.

C.     It is often easy to miss “the message for the verses” and thus miss the entire point of the thought.

I. 23:1-3 - The Lord Provides

A.     We are not made to wander through this life on our own as we have someone who is willing to guide us.

1.     He is one capable of leading his to sheep to places where they…

a.     Can rest – green pastures

b.     Can drink – quiet waters

B.     A shepherd is the only one that can lead his sheep to a place where they can rest, relax and restore themselves.

1.     Impossible for the sheep to know where to go on their own.

2.     Our Great Shepherd instructs on which paths will bring honor and glory to His name.

II. 23:4-5 - The Lord Gives Comfort and Security

A.     The shepherd is able to lead his sheep even through the darkest and scariest of places.

1.     Even through the valley of the shadow of death.

a.     His rod and staff are symbols of protection and safety.

B.     Even when the enemy pursues, the Great Shepherd is capable of providing for the needs of His sheep. Ps. 92:10-15

III. 23:6 - The Lord Gives Blessings

A.     Through all the bad and rough times, the sheep can rest assured their shepherd will never leave them.

B.     As a result of the shepherd’s goodness and kindness, the sheep will abide by His command.

1.     It is not just due to being filled, but also the fruits of a thankful attitude.

2.     Dwelling in His house means…

a.     We live as if in constant worship of Him.

b.     We are in His constant service.

c.      We recognize the privilege we have in being called His child.

Conclusion

A.     Jesus is our Great Shepherd who is capable of leading and guiding us through life.
