Research Indicates some disturbing trends in America: Most believers today think of themselves as individuals first, Americans
second, and Christians third. What does it mean to fear and be in awe of God? Does
reverence have a priority in your life?
I. What Is Reverence?
A.
Reverence
1.
Deos – “godly fear, awe”
– Heb. 12:28
2.
Phobeo – “To fear; to
terrify, frighten” – Eph. 5:33
B.
The point is: man is to have a healthy respect (or fear) for the
Almighty.
II. Whom Shall We Revere?
A.
Parents
1.
Children are to possess a healthy fear (respect) for their
parents. Lev. 19:3; Heb. 12:9
2.
Honoring our parents means more than just doing what they tell us
to do. Eph. 6:1-2
a.
It is obedience with the proper attitude.
B.
The aged
1.
A tendency to view those with gray hair as unneeded and useless. Lev. 19:32
a.
There is much to be gained by listening to those older than us. Prov. 20:29
b.
Are to be respected and honored –
1 Tim. 5:1-2
2.
The “gray heads” amongst us are a tremendous source of knowledge
and wisdom. Prov. 16:31

God thru worship
1.
Our worship, while not confined to a building, is an important
part of our service to God.
a.
How can we revere God in worship?
1)
By paying attention; not talking, sleeping, etc.
2)
Participating in the service; singing, praying, etc.
3)
Understanding; appreciation of actions involved.

We must possess the right attitude when we approach God in
worship. Ps. 2:11
D.
God thru obedience
1.
Obedience is the key to a successful relationship with God. Heb. 12:28

It is about recognizing God’s desire for us. Heb.
5:9
2.
Because He is God we must remember our rightful place.
Deut. 4:35, 39; 7:9
E.
The consequences of being irreverent
1.
God alone is worthy of the praise man offers. Ps. 111:9

We must hold God in high regard. Ps. 111:10; 89:7

Possessing a healthy fear for God will help us cultivate the
proper relationship with Him.
