Teaching Kids Media Discernment
Introduction:
Last week, we talked about how the media
influences kids. It influences & maps out reality for kids and it shapes
the behavior of our kids. The media is most likely the most criticized force in
today’s youth culture. But it most likely the most misunderstood. We can live a
God honoring life in a media-saturated world. Here’s how:
I. Focus on the Message, not the delivery system.
A.
Walt
Mueller: It is important to differentiate
between the media’s vehicle & content.
1.
We
should help teens evaluate the message in the media.
B.
We
need to teach our kids to use media that points them toward God, rather than
away from God. See 1 Tim. 4:11
II. We must evaluate everything
biblically.
A.
The
bible is the measuring stick for everything we see and hear.
1.
Informed
& regular study of God’s word can yield specific and help guidance on what
to celebrate & enjoy, and what to avoid.
B.
Phil.
4:8 is a good passage upon which to base our biblical worldview.
C.
We
need to be prepared to make decisions about the media we evaluate.
1.
Does
it have value for personal entertainment & enjoyment?
2.
Does
it draw you closer to Christ & Christian values?
3.
Does
it contradict what God has said is right and lead a person away from Christ.
D.
Parents…we
also need to teach our kids how to make good judgments for themselves.
E.
Teens:
you need to understand that offering guidance & direction is the job of
your parents. See Eph. 6:4b.
III. We must examine ourselves.
A.
Parents
…what are we doing personally to guide them through the maze of media &
music? How can we be successful?
B.
Pray.
C.
Know
where God stands & plant yourself in the same place.
D.
Watch
your step.
1.
How
much time do I sit in front of the TV?
2.
What
shows do I watch?
3.
What
kind of music do you listen to?
4.
Romans
14:22 – Be consistent.
IV. Be Proactive.
A.
We
must develop some media guidelines & learn to say no.
B.
Some
suggested media guidelines:
1.
Limit
the number of media outlets in their bedrooms.
2.
Decide
how long the TV will be on in your home each day.
3.
Spend
viewing time together.
4.
Develop
standards on specific shows, themes, and program content that will and will not
be a part of the media menu in your home.
5.
Don’t
be afraid to say no.
Conclusion:
A.
How
has the world of media affected your attitudes, values & behaviors?
B.
We
must never underestimate the power of media to mold & shape us.
