What You Need to Know About Wicca

Introduction:

Our country is quickly abandoning long held spiritual principles. What is Wicca?  Is it a problem somewhere else, or is it affecting us locally?

I. What is Wicca?

  1. Gary Cantrell: (A Wiccan author) Wicca is based on harmony with nature and all aspects of the god and goddess divinity.
  2. Wiccans accept the fact that all life is sacred: plant, animal, and human.
  3. They deny moral absolutes – believe that nature is divine & seek to be in harmony with earth and nature.
  4. Wicca is officially recognized by the US government.

II. A brief history of Wicca.

  1. There is no official Wiccan tradition.
  2. Wicca came from pagan traditions out of agrarian societies – where the environment had a profound effect on survival.
  3. An additional aspect of the religion deals with women.
  4. Religion has been mainly practiced in secret – and still is today.
    1. Gerald Gardner is attributed to starting a common brand of Wicca that is practiced today.
    2. Gardner’s brand of Wicca was brought to the US in the early 1960’s.
  5. Wicca is not considered a cult anymore. It is considered a valid societal religion.

III. Basic Wiccan beliefs and worship practices.

  1. Wiccan worship is always polytheistic and practiced in small groups called covens.
  2. Sabbats are described as holidays that celebrate the male energy of the “All”, which is represented by God and the Sun.
  3. Esbats are celebrated once/month depending on the phase of the moon.
  4. Wiccans believe there is both a goddess and a god.
  5. Wiccan Magik involves symbols, alters, candles, tarot cards, crystals, and stones.

IV. What Wicca is NOT:

  1. It is not Satanism.
  2. Wiccans do not offer blood sacrifices or practice orgies.
  3. Do not intentionally cast spells on people to harm them.

V. Why is Wicca so attractive?

  1. Wicca is growing.  Said to be 2nd fastest growing religion in US after Islam.

1.     Changing media perceptions.  Movies, television, magazines, internet.

  1. Why is Wicca so attractive?

1.     It is attractive for those who do not desire or appreciate absolute truth.

  1. Think of how this religion appeals in the postmodern world.

1.     Today, moral absolutes are disparaged & statements of truth are doubted.

2.     Wicca is the religion of nature worship.

VI. A biblical response to Wicca.

  1. There is absolute truth.  Wicca denies it.

1.     Scripture says that God is the one who constructs human reality – not humans themselves. Acts 17:24-31.

  1. Christianity celebrates the death and resurrection of Jesus as a historical event.  1 Corinthians 15.  Wiccans celebrate and worship the creation.

Conclusion:

  1. John 14:6 – here is an absolute truth we need to share with the world.
  2. Do you need to come to Christ?
