The Church and Charity Giving

Introduction:

John 18:36 – Jesus’ kingdom is spiritual – His mission on earth was spiritual. In 1 Peter 2:4-10 – Peter spoke of the spiritual nature of the church. Despite this clear teaching in scripture, some have sought to change the primary mission of the church from spiritual to physical. This is especially the case in providing benevolent help for the needy. While we sympathize with those experiencing financial difficulty, it is important to realize that the NT pattern shows the local church is limited in whom benevolent help can go to.

I. The New Testament Pattern

A.       During the first century, local churches gave benevolent help to faithful Christians.

1.          Romans 15:26 – funds gathered for needy saints in Jerusalem.

2.         2 Cor. 8-9 – funds were raised by saints in Macedonia to help Jerusalem.

a)        See esp. 9:6-8; 10-15

B.        Christians have a responsibility to be there for each other. Especially in times of need.

1.          No example of NT churches contributing to the needy outside the church.

C.        Since we see no NT example of congregations helping those outside the church – out of respect to God’s authority, we abstain from this practice.

II.    Biblical Expectations on Work

A.       God expects us to work to meet our financial needs.

1.          A quick & effective cure for money problems is to go to work.

2.         1 Timothy 5:8; 2 Thess. 3:10.

B.        Al Sandlin: When able-bodied people could work, but won’t work, it is clearly taught that they are to go without their needs being met. Thus to aid those who simply choose not to work when they could is to violate God’s decree regarding the work ethic.

III.  A work of individuals:

A.       God also gave expectations to individual Christians to help persons in time of need.

1.          Gal. 6:10 – context: the individual

B.        Mt. 25:35-40

C.        When needy individuals from the community approach us, individual Christians have an opportunity to help out if they have the ability.

1.          Judgment matter on who, how much, when to help.

2.         It’s OK to ask questions. A person who is genuine will not mind answering your questions.

D.       Many Christians look forward to the opportunity to help others. 1 Thess. 5:14-15

1.          There can be wonderful opportunities to serve & really make a difference.

2.         Helping the needy in the community does not always have to be monetary in nature.

Conclusion:

A.       Touchy subject….but there are biblical principles we need to be aware of on this subject.

1.          All of us have the opportunity to serve others & truly make a difference for Christ. We can truly be involved in the community!  Mt. 5:14-16.
