Defending the Truth

Introduction:

See 2 Tim. 4:1-3 and 1 Pet. 3:15. That the truth needs to be defended shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. We live in a time in which the religious community has undertaken a “no holds barred” approach to preaching and teaching the gospel.  How does one preach and teach against all the false teachings of today?

I.     What Does It Mean To Defend The Truth?

A.    Defense – Apologia “Verbal defense, speech in defense” (Thayer).

B.    1 Peter 3:15 - It is the duty of every Christian to be prepared to give a defense of what we believe.

1.      Jude 3 - Must be done with every ounce of strength.

        II. The Need for a Defense

A.    The need for defending the truth is not a new concept for us.

1.      Many problems in 1st century exist today.  See 2 Tim. 4:3-4

2.     Tactics may change but the desire to obtain followers hasn’t.               

3.     Why some seek to spread false doctrines…

a.     Pride; Jealousy; Ignorance

B.    The warnings of Paul need to be heeded today.  Acts 20:28-31

       III. Must Have a Proper Attitude

A.    When we defend the truth we must maintain a Christ-like attitude.

1.      Not saying we shouldn’t be strong or forceful.  2 Tim. 1:7; Eph. 6:19

2.     Part of being strong and forceful is pointing out error.

a.     Should we name names?  Absolutely!

b.    Some confused naming names with calling names!

B.    The ultimate goal is to glorify God (by defending His truth) and bring others to Him.

1.      To do that one must speak wisely in each situation.  Col. 4:5-6

2.     Must seek to edify or build up.  Eph. 4:29

       IV.   How Can We Defend The Truth?

A.    Knowing the truth.

1.      Can’t possibly defend something I don’t know.  I Pet. 3:15

B.    Maintaining an open mind.

C.    Standing up for what’s right.

D.   Boldly proclaiming the truth.

Conclusion

A.    Everywhere we look today we find an area in which the truth needs to be defended. Are you prepared to boldly make a defense for what you believe?
