The Attitude of Elders in Their Work

Introduction:

In this series, we have discussed the responsibilities elders, their work, and their authority. If the “what” of elders work is important, then the “how” is equally important. Their rule must be characterized by practical wisdom. The elders understanding of his work needs to be implemented within the framework of his experience, maturity, and spirituality.

 

I.      Proper Attitudes of Those who Serve as Elders

A.    1 Pet. 1:22 – elders must possess a sincere & fervent love for the Lord & His church.

1.     It must be a self-sacrificial love demonstrated by real shepherds.

B.    Rom. 12:3-5 – elders must possess humility.

1.     Gal. 6:1-5 – note the emphasis in these verses on humility and the need for giving heed to self.

2.     1 Cor. 9:27 – give constant consideration to keeping house in order.

a)    Pro. 25:28 – man who can’t govern himself can hardly govern others.

b)    Introspection must precede supervision.

3.     Titus 2:7-8 – elders should be “patterns” worthy to be followed.

C.     1 Pet. 5:2 - They must serve with eagerness.

1.     Spirit of Isaiah – Isa. 6:8 – Here am I send me.

2.     God intends them to do their work with joy – not grief – Heb. 13:17

D.    Phil. 2:4 – they must serve with honorable motives.

E.     Rom. 8:37 – elders must be positive.  The nature of the elder’s work demands he rise above negativism and defeatism.

 

II.     The Manner of the Elder’s Work.

A.    Titus 1:7 – Elders are God’s stewards.

B.    1 Tim. 3:1; 1 Thess. 5:12-13 – elders conduct themselves with dignity, honor, and respect.

C.     Elders should move with gentleness, patience, and courtesy

D.    Rom. 12:4-8 – elders must lead with diligence, hard work, and energy.

1.     12:8 – lead with diligence.

2.     Involves good judgment, common sense, and wisdom.

3.     Much that elders do involves organizing and coordinating.

 

Conclusion:

A.    There is a need for elders not only to understand what their work is, but to carry out that work in ways that are suggested by wisdom and spiritual mindedness.

B.    Their goal is to pattern their lives after the “Chief Shepherd” – knowing that if they do so, they are promised to receive the crown of glory that does not fade away.
