Who is the Holy Spirit?

Introduction:

Subject concerning HS a neglected one. Easy to place the teaching/knowledge of the HS down a few notches. Many misconceptions about the HS. But…the bible is clear about Him & His work. Tonight: We will examine the personality of the HS. Must remember the Holy Spirit is a WHO…not a WHAT. He is NOT: A mystical; indefinite; phantom like force. Not a mere influence; or an impersonal power! Not the Bible! He is a revelator.  The Word is a revelation. Who is the Holy Spirit?

I. The Holy Spirit is God: A Part of the Godhead.

A.    He is deity! Deity: That which makes God God!

B.    Holy Spirit is part of the Godhead & associated w/the Father & Son. 

1.    Eph. 4:4-6; 2 Cor. 13:14; Rom. 15:30 28:19; 1 John 5:7

C.   The Holy Spirit was: Gen. 1:1-2 – present at creation. See also 1:26-27

1.    Mt. 3:16-17 – present at the baptism of Jesus

2.    Mt. 28:19 – 3rd person of the Godhead in which Christians are to be baptized in the name of.

D.   What is the Godhead? Simple answer: Supreme Deity!  Consists of:

1.     God the Father; Jesus the Son; and the Holy Spirit

II. The HS is a person.

A.    He is an individual, rational being w/an indivisible nature.

B.    John 14:26 – Jesus promised to send the apostles another guide.

C.   1 Cor. 2:10-11 – He has a mind in which He searches hidden things of God.

D.   NT refers to the HS as a “He” not an “it.” John 14:26; 15:26; 16:7-8; 13-14

E.    Observe the personal qualities & attributes of the HS:

1.    in FC – HS spoke directly to men – 1 Tim. 4:1; Acts 8:29; 10:19

2.    John 14:26 – taught apostles; John 16:13 – guided the apostles.

3.    John 15:26; Rom. 8:16-17– testify

4.    1 Cor. 2:10 – searches; 1 Cor. 12:11- possess will & volition.

5.    Eph. 4:30; Isa. 63:10 – can be grieved; Acts 5:3 – lied to;

6.    Mt. 12:24-32 – sinned against – Pharisees denied power of Jesus.

7.    Heb. 10:29 – despised; Acts 7:51, 53 – can be resisted

8.    Rom. 15:30 – loves; Rom. 8:27 – has a mind.

F.    These passages make it clear that the HS has the same essence & nature as Jesus & the Father.

III. Titles of the HS:

A.    Spirit of God - Mt. 3:16; Rom. 8:9; 15:19; 1 Cor. 2:11-14; 3:16; Eph. 4:30

B.    Spirit of Christ. - Acts 16:7; Rom. 8:9; Phil. 1:19; Gal. 4:6; 1 Pet. 1:11

C.    Holy Spirit;

D.    Spirit of truth. 1 Cor. 2:9 – Reveals; brings to light; exposes; & explains truth.

1.    John 16:7-11; This happened on Pentecost – Acts 2:4, 37

E.    Helper; Comforter; Advocate - John 14:16,26; 16:7; 1 John 2:1; Rom. 8:26-27

Conclusion:

A.    In this lesson we have attempted to describe WHO the HS is.

1.    Not some mysterious force; essence.

2.    Rather, He is a person a part of the Godhead.

B.    Have you responded to what He has revealed?
