Christ in Our Place

Introduction:

In Romans 5:6-11, we are told about the price paid on our behalf. We need to spend more time concentrating on what the life of Jesus means to us and to the sacrifice made on our behalf. Today’s lesson looks at 3 main points from Rom. 5:6-11. In Romans 5:1-5 – Paul shows the tremendous blessing that all men have through Jesus. It is because of Jesus that we have opportunity to rejoice. But, what did Jesus have to endure in order to give us these blessings?

I. 5:6 – Jesus died for the ungodly and those sick with sin.

A.    What does Paul mean when he talks about being without strength?

1.    Before salvation, men are dead spiritually because of their sin.

a)    Eph. 2:1-6 – dead spiritually because of sin.

b)    Colossians 2:11-13 – what of the Colossians?

B.    At the right time, Jesus was brought forth in the flesh.

C.   Jesus died for the ungodly.

1.    Those who were enemies of God.

2.    Jesus died INSTEAD of the ungodly! His life was laid down in our stead!

II. 5:7-9 – We have been justified by faith through His blood.

A.    5:7 – we would be reluctant to die for other men who are around us.

1.    5:8 – God demonstrated His love by sending Jesus to die while we were yet sinners.

B.    5:9 – We’ve been purchased by the blood we are no longer Satan’s but Christ’s!

1.    How does one come into contact w/Jesus blood?

a)    Eph. 1:7; 2:11-13 – blood of Jesus brings us into right relationship w/God.

b)    We must be washed in His blood – 1 Cor. 6:11; Rev. 1:5; 5:9

c)    1 Pet. 3:21 – this is accomplished via baptism.

2.    Have you had your sins washed away?

C.   Take advantage of the death of Christ.

III. 5:10-11 – We can be saved by His life & rejoice!

A.    Mt. 28:18 – Jesus has been given all authority & power.

1.    He is living, exalted, and a triumphant Redeemer!

2.    John 14:19

B.    Because of this…we may have great joy!

1.    We can expect eternal glory!

2.    We can know that we are His!

3.    Mt. 11:28-30 - We have been released from the burden of sin!

Conclusion:

A.    Jesus died in our place.

B.    Have YOU been justified through His blood because of your faith?
