The Hidden Treasure and Pearl of Great Price

Introduction

Matthew 13 has been referred to as the “Sermon in Parables.”  Jesus was in the 2nd year of his ministry, known as the “Galilean Ministry.” In Matthew 13:1-35, Jesus spoke 6 parables to the multitudes, all concerning the kingdom of heaven. He wanted the multitudes to understand the glory and greatness of the place He promised to go and prepare for them. Starting in 13:36, Jesus spoke last group of parables to His disciples privately.  The kingdom of God is so valuable that it is worth sacrificing for!

I. 13:44-46 - The Parables.

A.    13:44 - The hidden treasure.

1.     The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure…with enormous, supreme value.

2.     this man happened to find the treasure…and then may have  feared someone else would find it.

3.     Jesus wishes to teach a simple lesson on values here.

4.     13:44c - He seized the crucial moment when it came to him.

5.     Three basic truths about the kingdom of heaven found in this passage:

a)    kingdom of heaven is a “hidden treasure.”  it is valuable.

b)    there is great joy in the kingdom of heaven - it is exciting.

b)    one must sacrifice “all” for the kingdom of heaven - it is demanding.

B.    13:45-46 - The Pearl of Great Price.

1.     Here, Jesus speaks of a “merchant”.  On a quest…a mission.

2.     What was he seeking? 13:45...fine pearls. 

3.     The kingdom of heaven has an enormous value.

a)    13:46 contains three verbs which demonstrate great sacrifice.

b)    “went”, “sold”, “bought.”

4.     notice again three basic truths about the kingdom of heaven:

a)    there is to be a seeking for the kingdom - it is significant

b)    the kingdom is like beautiful pearls - it is valuable

c)        one must sacrifice “all” for the kingdom - it is demanding.

II. What can we learn?

A. Heaven is an incomparable treasure.

1.     It is associated with unsurpassable value and supreme worth.

B.    Heaven is associated with unspeakable Joy.

1.     No regret, complaining; grudges.

2.     How is our joy? Rom. 14:17 - kingdom of heaven is all about joy.

C.     Heaven will be found by those who are determined to get there.

1.     We are people with a mission.

D.    Heaven will be worth whatever sacrifices have to be made!

1.     Mt. 16:24-25 – discipleship is demanding.

Conclusion

A.    Is the story of the hidden treasure and the pearl of great price your story?

B.    Have you paid the price and are you willing to sacrifice all to be a part of it?
