I.  Introduction:

A.  Need to be made aware from time to time lessons about the cross of Christ.

1.  Notice circumstances in our text. Statement He saved others himself he cannot save. Shocks me and then it strengthens me and my faith.

a.  How can it strength us? The statement was made by enemies.

b.  The evidence was overwhelmingly clear:  He was able to save others they could not deny the facts. He saved:

1.  Blind Bartimaus - heals him.

2.  Man who had devils cast them out

3.  Lepers of Luke 17

4.  Raised Lazarus- John 11

5.  Others he told their faith has save you or I have forgiven you.

2.  The power to find forgiveness in Christ today is through obedience to the Gospel - Mark 16:15-16

B.  Let us notice some things about this statement.

II.  Discussion:

A.  It is a Bold face Lie!

1.  Lied when they said it.  He could have saved himself!

a.     John 1:1 - Not only Son of God but God in every part of deity

b.    John 2:19 - Destroy this temple and I will raise it up.

2.  In the garden when the mob came to get him. Drew swords Jesus said put them up don’t you know that I can call to heaven and have 12 legions of angels! What a sight that would be.

3.  Jesus could have saved himself don’t think that he couldn’t have.

B.  Statement is most definitely true!

1.  When made statement it was also true.  He couldn’t save himself!

a.  Mart. 26:54 It must be. Scriptures need to be fulfilled.

2.  If had saved himself would have made every OT Prophet a liar right on through to John the Baptizer greatest of all prophets the reason I know Jesus said not risen one greater than John.

3.  Yet if he hadn’t done that then there words wouldn’t have been fulfilled.

a.     Isa. 53:7

b.    Dan. 2:44

4.  The things we read in Luke 24:44 wouldn’t be true if Jesus had not come down from the cross!

a.  He would have made the Holy Spirit a liar!

b.  Some think only worked in N.T days 2 Peter 1:19-21 God breathed.

1.  This has nothing to do with actual breathing, but it has to do with what God has made known for us in regards to salvation.

2.  These men spoke as they were moved.

c.  Heb. 10:1 Shadows of OT would have meant nothing.

1.  All shed blood looked to one person, Jesus Christ.

5.    Have heard people say men made perfect under the old law. Men saved under the old law. In one sense and only one. Only as blood was shed looking forward to a day when they would be made perfect.

a.  Shown us in Heb. 8, 9, 10! - principle of sins remember from year to year. Some say rolled forward.

6.  Heb. 11: speaks what they had, walk and talked but had received the ultimate in promise.

a.  Heb. 11:39,40

C.   Every shadow looks forward to the day of Salvation in Christ.

1.  In which Kingdom of God would include all the saved in all ages but only by and through that point in history we speak of and preach the cross of Christ. The center of our attention. Christ’s blood is the ultimate in all of God’s plan.

a.  Had he come down from the cross -  no salvation for you and me.

b.  Have heard people say members of the church of Christ don’t believe in blood just water - not so!

2.    There is power & salvation in the blood

a.     Rev. 1:5; 5:9

b.    Matt. 26:28

c.     Eph. 1:7

3.  He stayed on the cross so we might be saved! He died for you and me.

D.  One time in which God the Father turned his head So when Jesus said  My God, My God why have you forsaken me. The answer is for your sins and mine.

1.  Jesus didn’t just teach us how to live he taught us how to die!

Think of Jesus on cross bleeding, suffering, in awful pain & agony, and read His words in John 19:26-27 -

a.     He was constantly looking to others needs.

2.  Taught us how to live again.

a.  He was raised from the dead. Tomb was empty!

b.  Stone rolled away. Not so Jesus could get out. But so disciples could - get in and see it empty.

3.  It is important for us to understand and appreciate the cross of Christ as well as:  his life, his death, and fact he lives again.

III.  Conclusion

A.  Rom. 5:7-8

1.  Didn’t die for us just because nice people, because we are good looking as some think we are.

2.    He Died for us while we were yet sinners. Because he loved us.

a.  1 John 3:16

b.  Consider this passage and see the cost of redemption.

3.  Reconsider the passage in Mt. 26:42  He saved others himself he cannot save.

a.  Wrong why he did for you and me.

b.  Look back at the cross and you deserve to go to hell.

B.  Think on picture of Christ on the cross. Question in mind Why?

1.    Remember Jesus who taught in principle and fact its first the suffering and then the glory. Cross first and then the crown.

2.    Hell not prepared for you and me but for devil and his angels. Any that want to live like the devil will end up there.

3.    May God help us all to realize He saved others Himself he cannot save only in the sense he wanted redemption for you and me..

C.   Have you Been Redeemed?  Is your name written in the book of life?

D.   Why not come to Jesus tonight?

1.    He died for your sins.  Without coming to Him you have no hope!

E.    Why not come back to Jesus tonight?

F.    If your subject, please come forward as we stand as we sing…
