Hell: The Destiny of the Unbeliever

Introduction:

God’s word says much about hell. The word appears at least 55 times in scripture, and words that have similar meaning appear many more times in God’s word. Since God’s word speaks of this place so much, it is a subject worthy of our attention. It is something that we should be afraid of and do everything we can to avoid it.

I. We should be fearful of hell because it is:

A.     It is eternal.

1.     Matthew 25:46

B.     It is a place of darkness.

1.     2 Peter 2:4; Jude 13 (blackness of darkness forever…)

2.     Look at the contrast in 1 John 1:5

C.     It is a place of fire.

1.     Mark 9:44-46

2.     Scriptures – paint picture that hell is a pace of pain and absolute terror.

3.     Consider Revelation 20:10, 15. Matthew 25:30

4.     There will be no relief – Mark 9:44-45

D.    It is a place of utter hopelessness.

II. Some who go there who did not expect to go there.

A.     Galatians 5:19-21 – those who practice these things will not inherit heaven.

B.     Colossians 3:5-9 – note the sins listed here. How have these things effected persons inside the church?

C.     2 Peter 1:3-11 – those who do not grow spiritually place themselves in eternal jeopardy.

D.    1 John 4:7-10 – those who do not practice brotherly love place themselves in eternal jeopardy.

Conclusion:

A.     What is the condition of your soul?

B.     Revelation 21:8 – Hell is the destiny of the unbeliver.

C.     You don’t have to go to this place – respond in obedience to the gospel.
